McCain en internet: 2000 vs. 2008

Grappig. McCain wordt in de (online) media steeds meer neergezet als een computer en internet-analfabeet.

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, he explained that “I am forcing myself. … Let me put it this way, I am using the computer more and more every day.”
“I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself,” he told The New York Times in July.
“I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need.”

Opvallend als je dat vergelijkt met de campagne van McCain uit 2000 waarin hij het meest vooruitstrevend was in het gebruik van internet (nog vier jaar vóórdat Howard Dean zijn internetcampagne voerde).

“I’m excited my campaign is making use of the cutting edge in communications technology,” said McCain, who yesterday also participated in the first online chat of his campaign. “My web site offers the latest features to help supporters, committed or potential, as well as reporters, students and the just plain curious.”
“The Internet provides us with a new and exciting opportunity to communicate directly with voters,” said McCain. “Each of us can now become better informed and more closely involved with candidates and their positions on the issues. Using sites like mine, citizens young and old can find the information they need to make more educated choices about their leaders.”

De oude campagnemanager van Howard Dean, Joe Trippi, reageert dan ook verbaast in het artikel van Politico:

“The whole thing is flabbergasting to me,” said Joe Trippi, the Democratic consultant who served as the campaign manager for the 2004 Howard Dean campaign that was the first to become wildly successful at raising money and support online.
“McCain’s 2000 campaign was so tech-savvy that it scared me. It was the whole reason I started focusing on the tech stuff for the Democrats,” Trippi said.
