Over the last couple of years traditional media has tried to formulate an answer to this development in finding a balance between print – and online information, in keeping track with the newest technological trends to present their information and in figuring out how to integrate citizen journalism within their (online) information channels. What are workable/feasible models for the future?

In what way technological developments will influence the way we deal with news and information. Will they empower us more, will new constraints appear and will the old once be sorted in time? Is there a possible role for guides/filters and who would these filters be (newspapers, well known bloggers … ? And in line with the later, is there a possible role for guides/curators guiding non-expert users through the information in an open way build on trust and reputation? What are the possible ways forward for mainstream media in working with citizen journalists?

Three blogs which published sensitive information about upcoming Apple products could be made to disclose where the leaks came from.
A California judge said in a preliminary ruling that bloggers should not have the same protection afforded to journalists under US law.
Bron: BBC News – ‘Blogger fear’ in Apple leak case

A judge in California has decided that the sites don’t qualify as “journalism” (AP) under state law and/or the First Amendment. By his bizarre and dangerous standard, I apparently stopped being a journalist the day I left my newspaper job after a quarter-century of writing for newspapers.

When a blogger writes up daily accounts of an international conference, as David Steven did at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, that is journalism. When a magazine reporter repurposes a press release without checking facts or talking to additional sources, that is not. When a blogger interviews an author about their new book, that is journalism. When an opinion columnist manipulates facts in order to create a false impression, that is not. When a blogger searches the existing record of fact and discovers that a public figure’s claim is untrue, that is journalism. When a reporter repeats a politician’s assertions without verifying whether they are true, that is not.

This weekend I finished Dan Gillmor’s book We The Media. As I promised before I would give my opinion about it.
Gillmor writes passionately about journalism and the internet. We The Media starts off promising with accurate descriptions about these two subjects. It amused me to read such a recent book with examples that haven’t been used over and over in other writings.

In the first chapters Gillmore offers some interesting insights about the Big Media and their practise of journalism. He states that journalism in the age of weblogs is all about conversation instead of one-way communication. I’m happy to see that at least one (former) journalist gets it.
Gillmor however decays in the latter part of We The Media in almost hysterical warnings against the power of the traditional big companies on content and delivery. Gillmor outlines a society in wich all media are controlled by the old en new Big Media. The enthusiastic writing of the first part becomes a depressive one. I can understand that there are certain concerning developments on this subject, but I think Gillmor overreacts in this scenario. Think about the huge rise of Open Source Software; initiatives like Linux, Firefox and Emule demonstrate that individuals can co-operate in order to counter these Big Media.
Nevertheless We The Media is an amusing and insightful book on the relation between journalism and new media and their shared future.

I’m halfway through We the Media, and I have to say that it really gives me some extra insights. I can surely recommend it to everybody studying weblogs.

Since We the Media is licensed under a Creative Commons license, it can be downloaded for free on Gillmor’s site.
